#StaffyFASHION: Wear it now: Spring 2015 pastel coat trend

I am not a slave to fashion trends, but I'm always excited and inspired by looks that come down the catwalk. The shows for spring and summer 2015 were no exception, and
I found myself too enthusiastic about what I saw to wait around for spring to arrive! I like to pick and choose little pieces of contemporary fashions and infuse them into my own signature style.
Whether you save up and invest in an actual designer piece or hit up thrift stores (remember, nothing out there is new!) why wait until everyone else is wearing the spring 2015 trends? I say seize the moment and be the person who's ahead of the game. With that said, here is one of my favorite spring and summer 2015 trends and how you can make it your own...now!

Pastel Coats
I live in San Francisco and it is dreary this time of year. The skies are gray, and the crowded streets are packed with black and gray coats, boots and umbrellas. The chill in the air paired with the dismal urban backdrop can be melancholic to say the least. Rather than sink into a monotone triggered depression, I've decided to be a one person rainbow and wear a cheery coat in a shade of sherbert!

Coral "Boyfriend Coat" ($30.13 at newlook.com) This brushed wool menswear-inspired coat is an interesting juxtaposition of masculine and feminine. The boxy cut is classic Wall Street, but the vibrant coral hue makes this coat refreshingly unique. Throw on a pair of perfectly worn in jeans, a slouchy sweater, winter boots, and become the little ray of sunshine in a cloud of gray. For an extra touch, I'd also add a vintage brooch to the lapel and a chunky infinity scarf for added warmth.

Sun Up, Up and Away Coat ($45 modcloth.com)

I already have a velvet mustard yellow vintage trench in my wardrobe, but this thoroughly mod yet modern coat has me wondering if a gal can have too many sunshine colored coats in her closet. I love the minimalist cut, the oversized pockets and the asymmetrical zipper almost as much as I love pairing this color with leopard print and burgundy.

Topshop polka dot faux fur coat ($170 at nordstrom.com)
Faux fur + pink + polka dots = one super adorable winter coat! The trick to wearing a piece that is over-the-top girly is to balance it with something a little tougher. I would pair this coat with vegan leather pants, a comfy tee, and my favorite pair of Chuck Taylors. Add a thick flick of black eyeliner and a nude mouth for instant bad girl bombshell status.

For the penny-wise fashion maven

I come from a long lineage of thrift store treasure hunters, and let me tell you, the pastel coats I'm seeing on the spring and summer 2015 runways are identical to coats I see at thrifts stores all the time. I have found some of the most beautiful, timelessly crafted vintage coats and paid mere dollars for them. That feeling will always be much more exhilarating for me than shelling out several hundred (or thousand) dollars for a newly designed coat. Now before you start prowling your local Goodwill, here are a few things you should know before purchasing vintage coats:
- Check garments thoroughly for moth holes, cigarette burns, and stains. Some stains may come out with a thorough dry cleaning, but you never really know if you're taking a big risk.

- Don't pass on a coat just because it's missing buttons. I almost always take off the original buttons and add a whole new set. I think new buttons can give an old coat an entirely new look.

- Dry cleaning, new buttons, new linings, and tailoring can add up quickly. You may be getting a great deal on the actual cost of the coat, but how much money will be spent before you can actually wear it. Whenever you purchase vintage you have to weigh the pros and cons.

- Most musty odors can be corrected by dry cleaning or a good airing out in the sunshine. Don't pass on a great coat because it smells old.

Do you already own a beautiful pastel coat or will you consider buying one this winter or spring? As always I love to hear from readers, so please share how you feel about this trend! Also, if you have any penny-wise tips and tricks about DIY or vintage I'd love to read about it.
