For one reason or another, men seem to think that women exist solely
for their pleasure and enjoyment. And shockingly, that’s just not the
case. Believe it or not,
women are full, complex beings, whose lives are
much greater than what some man thinks of them.
Sadly, some men–many men– forget this simple fact. Apparently, this
doesn’t just happen with regular women on the street, it happens to
celebrity women as well. The only difference is they have the platform
and voice to shut this type of thinking down, publicly.
Enter Janelle Monae.
While many female artists choose to sell sex in their art, a decision
that is well within their right, Janelle Monae has chosen a different
path. You’ll frequently find her suited and booted in black and white.
While she’s explained the significance of her look on several
occasions (check the hyperlinks above), there are apparently some who
still don’t appreciate it.
One of Monae’s Twitter followers aired his gripes about her wardrobe choices on Twitter.
Boop.
In the words of Queen Latifah, “You haf fi letem know…”
Thankfully, homie just apologized and bowed out gracefully.
This is also a new response for us all to try on the street the next
time a man tells us to smile or offers some type of crude, crazy or
corny pick up line.
