Apple is NOT playing around when it comes to their exclusive deals.
As you know, Drake signed a $20 million exclusivity deal with Apple
Music.
Lil Wayne (who happens to be a Tidal co-owner) held his
LilWeezyAna Fest in New Orleans tonight that benefits after-school
programs in Louisiana.
Because of Wayne’s affiliation, Tidal became the official broadcaster
of the live stream — which was all good, until it came to Drake.
Prior to the show, Apple reportedly threatened to sue Tidal if they broadcasted Drake’s performance.
via Page Six:
A source told us, “Legal letters have
been sent to Tidal warning that Drake cannot appear on the Tidal stream
of the festival, either solo or part of a group, and if the warning was
ignored, the liabilities could be up to $20 million.
“This event is for charity, Drake is
doing two songs. Why does Apple think it can dictate to artists where
and when they can perform?”
Because Apple wasn’t playing any games, Tidal cut the stream during Drake’s set.
An exclusive deal is an exclusive deal, sorry Tidal.
